On the northern border of Brooklyn, Bushwick is a large and varied neighborhood. The border of Bushwick and Williamsburg is home to a rapidly developing arts scene, but cultural work in the part of Bushwick further south and east has not received the same exponential growth or attention. BAC’s Creative Coalitions program is focused on this part of Bushwick. We aim to connect and serve the long-time residents of Bushwick as well as the many artists who have moved there in recent years.
Using community feedback as our guide, in 2013 BAC hosted community discussion meetings and coordinated seminars and workshops on practical topics of use to a wide-cross section of artists and freelancers, including: grant writing, health care options for freelancers, the Affordable Care Act, and career resources and skills development.
We also work with interested community members to support artistic programs on the south-eastern end of the neighborhood, particularly programs that make the arts accessible to older as well as newer residents of the Bushwick community, and that foster connections and discussion between neighbors in this rapidly changing neighborhood.
